George Abualzulof is a Senior Human Rights Adviser – Chief of Universal Values Team at the United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) in New York.
Originally from Beit Sahur, Abualzulof (also spelled Abu Al-Zulof) is a Palestinian artist and a “Human Rights defender” with over 25 years of experience in the field of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. He also served as the General Director of Defence for Children International / Palestine (DCI-P) for 10 years. DCI-P is alleged to have ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organisation.
On social media, Abualzulof shares artwork and posts that support and glorify terrorists, and advocate for the destruction of Israel. In our view, such posts clearly violate United Nations (UN) rules regarding impartiality, objectivity, and independence. For reference, we also include links to the International Civil Service’s standards of conduct and UN Staff’s guidelines on social media use.
On 14 July 2021, Abualzulof updated his Facebook profile picture with a Samidoun banner “Freedom for Khalida Jarrar.” The Israeli Ministry of Defense designated Samidoun a terrorist organisation and “a subsidiary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). As part of a plea bargain, Jarrar, who is/was a member of the PFLP, was convicted for “holding a position in an illegal association,” and served two years in prison starting March 2021.
On 13 February 2022, Abualzulof posted a painting of Ghassan Kanafani to Instagram, and added these hashtags #freepalestine #prisonersrights #prisonersofwar. Officially, Kanafani was the spokesperson of the PFLP. He was assassinated in Beirut in July 1972 allegedly for his role in the Lod Airport Massacre.
Abualzulof also shared his video guide on how to draw a portrait of “the Palestinian martyr and thinker Ghassan Kanafani” on Instagram and YouTube.
On 28 March 2022, Abualzulof shared a copy of an artwork of what appears to be younger George Habash, the founder of the PFLP, and added this comment “The conscience and beating heart of Palestine” and “Your soul has eternity.”
On 15 May 2023, the day that Palestinians marked the “75th anniversary of the Nakba,” Abualzulof uploaded an image of his latest painting and commented “We will return and we will tear down the wall.” Under International Law, Palestinian refugees do not have a right to return to Israel. The so-called “Palestinian Right of Return” would mean the destruction of Israel as a Jewish state.
On 30 March 2020, Abualzulof shared an image of “My painting on earth day“. The painting includes a map of Israel covered in the flag of Palestine colours, and wiping Israel off the map.
On 19 August 2020, Abualzulof uploaded a painting of a supposedly Palestinian woman holding a key (the symbol of the “Palestinian return”), and standing next to a map that erases Israel. He added these hashtags #palestine #palestina #nakba #humanrights.
In our mind, George Abualzulof should be removed from office with immediate effect. We urge our readers to report him to the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) and to UN Ethics.
