Elsy Abi Assi (إلسي أبي عاصي) is a Lebanese Journalist and a Principal News Presenter at Al Jazeera Arabic channel in Doha, Qatar.
Abi Assi is the anchorwoman who conducted a live phone interview with a woman named Jamila al-Hissi claiming that Israeli soldiers in Al-Shifa hospital had “raped women, kidnapped women, executed women, and pulled dead bodies from under the rubble to unleash their dogs on them.” Hamas and Al-Jazeera later denied those allegations as fabricated, and Al-Jazeera took down the video footage.
We decided to look into Abi Assi’s social media activities. We discovered posts that appear to justify Hamas’ October 7 terror attack and deny reports of sexual violence against Jewish women. We also found messages that promote antisemitism.
On October 9, 2023 Abi Assi quoted a post accusing “Jewish settlers” of attempting to “burn a Palestinian child,” and said “among the daily crimes that Palestinians are exposed to… then they ask how did we get here? #Al-Aqsa Flood” (Google Arabic to English). We investigated the allegation. It appears that the child, Shafiq Muhammad Khader, was injured by an explosion of a suspicious object in Tubas and NOT due to an attempt to burn him.
This is of course a reprehensible and profoundly antisemitic conduct by a Journalist who uses misinformation and fake news to justify Hamas’ atrocious crimes against Jewish civilians. Ironically, her X bio includes this statement “There is no place for misleading news and nasty comments.”
Elsy Abi Assi also denied the rape of Israeli women. On December 2, 2023 she quoted a post calling reports that Hamas committed rape in the 7 October terror attack “racist lies to justify more genocide,” and added “Israeli lies continued… officials in #Israel claimed that “rape crimes” were carried out by Al-Qassam fighters during the #Al-Aqsa Flood… without any convincing evidence so far” (Google Arabic to English).
The genocide charge is fictional. Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza does not amount to the destruction of a people. Also, earlier this month, a United Nations mission found convincing evidence that Hamas committed sexual violence on October 7, 2023.
Additionally, Elsy Abi Assi promotes antisemitism on social media to portray the Jewish state as being uniquely evil in the world. This includes nazi comparisons, modern blood lible alleging Israel deliberately targets children, and opposition to Jewish self-determination in our ancestral homeland.
