Muhammad Sami Abdullah Jarghoun (محمد سامي عبد الله جرغون)

Director and Supervisor of Smart Media Network | Rafah, Gaza

Death and Reported Roles

  • Death: Muhammad Sami Abdullah Jarghoun (محمد سامي عبد الله جرغون) was killed on October 7, 2023, reportedly by Israeli fire in an area to the east of Rafah city in the southern Gaza Strip.
  • Journalistic Association: The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), along with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), identified Muhammad Sami Jarghoun as a journalist for the Gaza-based Smart Media Network. This classification was uncritically repeated by Western media outlets. However, Smart Media described him as a director and supervisor. At that time, Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), openly condemned his killing.
  • Militant Affiliation: Muhammad Sami Jarghoun has been recognized in online obituaries and tributes as a brave fighter and hero of the Al-Qassam Rafah Brigade, who participated in the October 7 attacks, referred to by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups as “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” east of Rafah.

Update (June 22, 2026): The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades’ Military Media Department listed Muhammad Sami Jarghoun on its “martyrs” page, while Aqmar Tofan (أقمار الطوفان), a Telegram channel that commemorates Al-Qassam militants killed during the “Al-Aqsa Flood” (Tufan al-Aqsa), identified him as a Qassam fighter in the Martyr Mohammed Abu Harb (Shaboura) Battalion, Rafah Brigade.

Note 1: The IFJ also listed Muhammad Sami Jarghoun in its 2023 “killed list” report.
