Death and Reported Roles

  • Death: Yaqoub Annan Muhammad Al-Boursh (يعقوب عنان محمد البرش) died on November 13, 2023, reportedly from injuries sustained the previous day when an Israeli airstrike hit his family’s home in Jabalia.
  • Journalistic Association: The Committee to Protect Journalists and the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) identified Yaqoub Al-Boursh as a journalist and the executive director of Namaa Radio, while the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) referred to him as a photographer.
  • Militant Affiliation: Yacoub Al-Boursh was a militant operative of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas. He served within the military media of the Northern Brigade in Jabalia Camp and was recognized as a fighter in a tribute post by Al-Omari Mosque in Jabalia city.

Update (May 10, 2026): Amjad al-Shuhada (“Glories of the Martyrs,” أمجاد الشهداء), a Telegram channel affiliated with Hamas, confirmed that Yaqoub Al-Boursh was a fighter in the Martyr Abdul Raouf Nabhan Battalion’s Military Media Unit, within Al Qassam’s Northern Brigade.

Note 1: Yacoub Al-Boursh appears to have been a lawyer by profession who also served as a project manager at Namaa Sports Club. The Palestinian Lawyers Association eulogized him.

Note 2: Other direct family members of Yacoub Al-Boursh were killed in the attack on November 12, including his brother, Mousa Al-Boursh (موسى البرش), who was the Executive Director at Namaa Sports Club at the time. Neither Yacoub nor Mousa was a journalist.

Note 3: The Al-Boursh family appears to have close and extensive ties to the Hamas leadership. Dr. Muneer Abdullah Al-Boursh (د. منير عبدالله البرش), the current Director General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, was previously the President of Namaa.
