Rizq Bassem Abu Shakian (رزق باسم ابو شكيان)
Journalist and editor for the Palestine Media Agency | Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza
Death and Reported Roles
- Death: Rizq Bassem Abu Shakian (رزق باسم ابو شكيان) was killed on July 6, 2024, reportedly as a result of an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home in the Nuseirat refugee camp, located in the central Gaza Strip, northeast of Deir al-Balah.
- Journalistic Association: The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) identified Rizq Abu Shakian as a journalist and editor at the Palestine Media Agency. However, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) described him as a media worker and administrator for the pro-Hamas Palestine Now Agency. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) uncritically repeated this claim.
- Militant Affiliation: A Telegram channel titled “ثورة الروح” (Revolution of the Spirit), widely considered to be affiliated with or closely aligned with Hamas, posted a video tribute for the mujahid (fighter) Rizq Abu Shakian. The post used the hashtag #وداع_الشهيد (Farewell to the Martyr) and portrayed him as a militant operative of the al-Qassam Brigades, dressed in military fatigues.
Note: Amjad Abdulrahim Abdulqader Jahjouh (أمجد عبدالرحيم عبدالقادر جحجوح), a writer for the Palestine Media Agency, was killed in the same Israeli airstrike on July 6, 2024, along with his wife—journalist Wafaa Abu Dabaan—and their son.
