Death and Reported Roles
- Death: Muhammad Nasr Kamel Abu Huwaidi (محمد نصر كامل ابو هويدي) was reportedly killed on December 22, 2023, as a result of Israeli airstrikes in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood of eastern Gaza City. However, according to Eslam, his sister, Muhammad and his brother Mo’men were actually killed on December 15, 2023, and their bodies were not retrieved until after the IDF withdrew from Shuja’iyya on the morning of Friday, December 22, 2023.
- Journalistic Association: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and identified Muhammad Nasr Abu Huwaidi as a journalist who worked for Al-Istiqlal (or Al-Estiklal)—a weekly newspaper associated with the Islamic Jihad movement. Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), openly condemned his killing.
- Militant Affiliation: A Telegram channel dedicated to the military media of the “Palestinian resistance” issued an obituary recognizing Muhammad Nasr Abu Huwaidi as the “Martyr, the Mujahid” of the Shuja’iyya Battalion, Gaza Brigade.
Update (March 19, 2026): The Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, released an obituary for a group of military commanders who were killed during the Battle of Al-Aqsa Flood, which began on 7 October 2023. Among those named is Muhammad Nasr Abu Huwaidi, a commander in the Central Military Media Unit.
