Antisemitic conspiracies accusing Jews of plotting global domination have been circulating for over a century and even though accusations are known to be false a quick glance at extremist websites, or social media, soon reveals the lies are being repeated over and over again, often accompanied by overtly antisemitic depictions of Jews.
Two of the most commonly referred to examples, cited by believers in an attempt to defame Jews, are the ‘The Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ and the ‘Kalergi Plan’.
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion pamphlet claims to be a factual account of the minutes taken during 24 meetings attended by Jewish leaders at which they discuss how to disrupt Christian civilization by manipulating the economy and media. Their aim, allegedly, is to create a one world state – a world which Jews will rule and enslave all non-Jews.
In reality the Elders of Zion never existed and the text was written by a member of the Russian secret police to garner support for the Czar who, at the time, was facing unrest. The text would be translated, published and distributed worldwide and in 1923 it was utilised by Nazi theorist Alfred Rosenberg resulting in it becoming central to the Nazi’s anti-Jewish propaganda even though, three years previously, it had been exposed as a forgery created from the plagiarising of two satirical, fictional books.
The Kalergi Plan, while similar, goes one step further than the Protocol. In this dystopian tale not only are Jews plotting to rule the world, their plan includes replacing the white population of Europe with other races through mass immigration and inter-racial marriages.
This concocted theory is based on the work of Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi who, in the 1920s, envisioned an alliance of European countries sharing values and policies while retaining their own individuality. He strongly believed in a future of racial integration in a world which lacked prejudice, but his belief drew the attention of the Nazis who in 1933, following false accusations his aim was the enslavement of Europe, ordered all his books to be burnt. By 1940 the Nazis had turned Kalergi’s words and vision from a peaceful, anti-racist world to a Jewry ruled world intent on eliminating the white population.
Even though both the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the Kalergi Plan are works of fiction, sadly and alarmingly some people still believe the Antisemitic rhetoric about Jewish world domination and the replacement of white populations and that fallacy, in recent years, has resulted in deadly attacks on Jews and other minorities.
