Yasser Sobhi Hassan Abu Namous (ياسر صبحي حسن ابو ناموس)
Independent photographer | Khan Yunis, Gaza
Death and Reported Roles
- Death: Yasser Sobhi Hassan Abu Namous (ياسر صبحي حسن ابو ناموس) was killed on October 27, 2023, allegedly as a result of a targeted airstrike on his home in Khan Yunis, located in southern Gaza.
- Journalistic Association: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) identified Yasser Abu Namous as a journalist with the Hamas-affiliated Al-Sahel Media Foundation (مؤسسة الساحل للإعلام). The claim was uncritically repeated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which published a letter from Mounir Anastas, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the State of Palestine to UNESCO. In the letter, Anastas listed Yasser Abu Namous as a journalist casualty and accused the “Israeli occupying army” of “deliberately targeting journalists with no constraints or consequences.”
- Militant Affiliation: Yasser Abu Namous is described as a militant operative of the Al-Qassam Brigades. His wife, Wafaa Salama, shared a photo of him in military fatigues, and his sister, Yaman, described him as a heroic Qassam martyr. Another sister, Amal, praised him as a “lion who left our home to join the Qassam Brigades and pledged allegiance,” and she also shared a photo of his gravestone identifying him as a commander in the Al-Qassam Brigades. Key inscriptions on the stone record his dual identity as a media worker and as an Al‑Qassam commander, and they match his recorded date of death: October 27, 2023, at age 31.
Note 1: The IFJ included Yasser Abu Namous in its 2023 “killed list” report.
Note 2: Yasser’s father, Subhi Hassan Atteya Abu Namous (Abu Yasser), appears to have been a commander in Hamas’ military wing, who was killed in March 2002.
