Death and Reported Roles
- Death: Bilal Maher Al-Hatoum (بلال ماهر الحاطوم) was killed on May 23, 2025, reportedly by a targeted Israeli drone strike in the Al-Saftawi neighborhood, northwest of Gaza City and west of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.
- Journalistic Association: The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedom (MADA), the Palestinian Journalist Protection Center (PJPC), and Al Jazeera have described Bilal Al-Hatoum as a journalist who worked in the broadcast engineering department at Sawt Al-Aqsa Radio (إذاعة صوت الأقصى). Also known as ‘Al-Aqsa Voice Radio,’ this station is owned and operated by Hamas as part of its Al-Aqsa Media Network.”
- Militant Affiliation: Bilal Al-Hatoum was portrayed as a heroic commander of the Qassam Brigades in social media posts eulogizing him.
Update (May 10, 2026): The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades’ Military Media Department now lists Muhammad Sami Jarghoun on its “martyrs” page, while Hamas-affiliated Telegram channels Amjad al-Shuhada (“Glories of the Martyrs,” أمجاد الشهداء) and Aqmar Tofan (“Moons of the Flood,” أقمار الطوفان) said he served as a field commander in the Martyr Imad Aqel Battalion (Western) within Al-Qassam’s Northern Brigade.
Note: Bilal’s brothers, Ahmed and Suhaib, were also commanders in the Al-Qassam Brigades; they too met a similar fate earlier in Israel’s war against Hamas.
