UN official Craig Mokhiber’s antisemitic rant falsely promoted as a “resignation letter”

Media outlets including Fox News, the Guardian etc. have mistakenly referred to UN official Craig Mokhiber’s antisemitic rant as a resignation letter without fact-checking their evidence.

The letter contains a number of antisemitic remarks, and Mokhiber has already been the subject of numerous complaints for antisemitism and violations of UN rules on impartiality.

1. Mr. Mokhiber’s antisemitism and extreme anti-Israel bias were exposed by GnasherJew on February 28, 2023. Mokhiber was reported for antisemitism and for violations of the UN’s impartiality, objectivity, and independence rules in March 2023 to the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services and UN Ethics.

2. The UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Turk was made aware of the complaint and our investigation into Mokhiber’s conduct, and he promised to take action.

3. We were informed earlier this year that Mr. Mokhiber had been terminated by UN officials. We are attempting to check this.

4. Mr. Mokhiber’s letter notably is printed on generic United Nations letterhead and NOT on the letterhead of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the office where he is a Director. Why is this?

5. It is also important to note that no mention of “resign” or “resignation” is made in his 4-page letter. Mr. Mokhiber says in his letter to the High Commissioner that “this will be my last official communication to you as Director of the New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights” and confirms that he “will leave the Office in a few days.” Is this because Mr. Mokhiber already had been terminated?

6. In September, 2023, Mr. Mokhiber already was referred to as a “former Director, NY Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights” by the Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship, an official UN annual training programme mandated by UN Resolution 35/201.

7. Furthermore, Mr. Mokhiber’s last public appearance as Director appears to have been April 6, 2023. He spoke at a UN event – “Mainstreaming ageing in the human rights-based approach – it’s more than just social inclusion.”

There are no other publicly available records of Mr. Mokhiber making any official UN appearance in any capacity since April 6, 2023.

All of this suggests to us and to one of our sources that Mr. Mokhiber either already had resigned under investigation or was terminated soon after April, 2023 because of his antisemitic and extreme anti-Israel prejudice.

The fact that the media published his antisemitic letter without fact checking is appalling and we will be complaining to the media regulators.
